PORT JERVIS, NY - Have you ever heard the Declaration of Independence read out loud? You may have read parts of it in school or even know the first and most famous opening paragraph. On Saturday, July 4, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at Orange Square in the City of Port Jervis, New York, you will be able to hear the Declaration of Independence read aloud in the park for only the eleventh time in more than one hundred years.

The program, called “Our Day of Deliverance” is being sponsored by the Minisink Valley Historical Society with assistance from the City of Port Jervis. The program will take place free of charge and be open to the public. In the event of rain or exceptionally hot and humid weather, the program will take place across the street at the Drew United Methodist Church at 49-51 Broome Street.

A program of history and music by the Fife and Drummers of the Broome Street Band will review the events leading up to the Declaration of Independence and what happened in the years that followed. Orange Square is one of the city’s most hallowed places being the site of the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean, Vietnam and War on Terrorism memorials. The park has been a community gathering place since the 1830s when the land was donated to the small village of Port Jervis by the D & H Canal Company.

Society Executive Director Peter Osborne said, “We are excited about this program because increasingly students are not being exposed to some of most historic moments of our nation’s past in the schools across our state. A quick class on the American War for Independence does not do justice to this document that became the foundation for our nation and has a place as one of the most important moments in world history. In addition, many in our nation only think of this day as another shopping day when in fact for more than 150 years it was considered the most important holiday of the year.”

Participant will also have a chance to sign an oath of allegiance and be given a sample of currency of the period.” People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and water. For further information regarding the “Day of Deliverance” program please call 845- 856-2375.
